Deck and Fence Painting in Nashville, TN

Tennessee weather is hard on outdoor wood. Summer humidity drives moisture deep into deck boards. UV exposure grays and cracks unprotected surfaces. Winter freeze-thaw cycles split seams and loosen fasteners. A deck or fence without a protective coating ages years in a single season.
AllBright Pro Painting has completed over 2,100 projects across Nashville and Middle Tennessee since 2015, earning a 5.0 Google rating with over 320 five-star reviews. We paint and stain decks, fences, pergolas, gazebos, and outdoor wood structures. Our primary deck staining products are from the Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck line, selected for Nashville’s climate demands. We also offer clear sealing without stain for homeowners who want to protect and preserve the natural appearance of their wood.

Our Services

What We Paint

We paint and stain decks, fences, pergolas, gazebos, and outdoor wood structures across Nashville and Middle Tennessee.

Decks

Wood decks, deck railings, stairs, and landings. Whether your deck is pressure-treated pine, cedar, or redwood, we assess the material and condition before recommending paint or stain. Horizontal deck surfaces take more abuse than any other exterior wood on your property — direct sun, standing water, and foot traffic simultaneously. The product and prep must account for all three.

Fences

Privacy fences, picket fences, split rail, and decorative fencing. Fences are often the largest continuous wood surface on a property and the most neglected. A fence that has gone 5 or more years without stain or paint in Nashville's climate will show graying, mildew, and early signs of rot at the base. We clean, prep, and coat the full fence surface including posts, rails, and pickets.

Charming Outdoor Space With Wooden Fence And Pergola

Pergolas, Gazebos & Outdoor Structures

Pergolas and gazebos take direct sun and rain on horizontal beams that trap moisture in joints. Outdoor structures require the same prep and product quality as a deck but with additional attention to overhead surfaces where water pools in connection points. We stain or paint all accessible surfaces including tops, undersides, and support posts.

Stain or Paint

Stain or Paint: Which One Is Right for Your Deck

This is the first decision and it determines everything else: product type, prep method, appearance, maintenance schedule, and cost. During the consultation, we assess your wood type, current condition, sun exposure, and how you use the space — then recommend the right approach for your situation.

Stain

Stain penetrates into the wood rather than sitting on top. It preserves the natural grain and texture while adding color and UV protection. Stain does not peel or chip because it bonds within the wood fibers rather than forming a surface film. When stain wears, it fades gradually and can be refreshed with a cleaning and a maintenance coat rather than a full strip and repaint.

Stain comes in three transparency levels. Transparent shows the full wood grain with minimal color, offering UV protection and water resistance. Semi-transparent adds color while still showing grain pattern. Solid stain provides full color coverage similar to paint but with a flatter finish that absorbs into the wood surface rather than forming a thick film. It hides grain completely and is often chosen for older decks where the wood is too weathered for a transparent look. Semi-transparent is a popular choice for Nashville decks because it balances appearance with protection.

Deck stain in Nashville’s climate typically needs refreshing every 2 to 3 years depending on sun exposure and foot traffic. South-facing decks fade faster. Covered porches last longer between coats.

Paint

Paint sits on top of the wood surface, forming a film. It provides full color coverage, hides imperfections, and offers a wider color selection than stain. Paint on a deck is more durable against scuffing and wear than transparent stain but has a tradeoff: when paint fails, it peels and chips rather than fading. Recoating a painted deck requires scraping and sanding the failed areas before reapplication.

Paint works well on deck railings, vertical fence surfaces, and structures where foot traffic is minimal. For horizontal deck floors that take direct foot traffic and weather, stain is usually the better long-term choice.

How We Help You Decide

During the consultation, we assess your wood type, current condition, sun exposure, and how you use the space. We recommend the product type that matches your situation rather than defaulting to one approach. If your deck has been previously painted, we evaluate whether it makes sense to continue with paint or strip and transition to stain. If your deck is new or bare wood, we typically recommend stain for the floor surface and paint or solid stain for railings.

Our Process

How Deck and Fence Projects Work with AllBright

From the first site visit to the final walkthrough, here is exactly how we manage deck and fence projects across Nashville and Middle Tennessee.

Step 1 — On-Site Consultation

We walk your deck, fence, or outdoor structure and assess every surface. We check wood condition, identify repairs, measure square footage, and discuss your goals: color preference, stain vs paint, maintenance expectations. Aaron Villanueva, who founded AllBright in 2015 and still walks job sites, reviews every estimate personally. You receive a detailed written estimate within 48 hours.

Step 2 — Scope & Schedule

Approve your estimate, sign the agreement, and submit a 25% deposit to lock your project date. We schedule deck and fence projects during dry weather windows and monitor forecasts to confirm your start date in advance. The remaining 75% is collected only after the final walkthrough — no surprise charges, no payment until you're satisfied.

Step 3 — Prep

Cleaning, pressure washing, drying, sanding, wood repair. Day 1 generally consists of prep work including scraping, sanding, and pressure washing to properly prepare the surface. We mask adjacent siding, landscaping, and hardscaping to protect surrounding surfaces from overspray and drips.

Step 4 — Application

Stain is applied with professional spray equipment, brushes, or a combination depending on the product and surface. Brush application works stain deeper into wood grain on floor surfaces. Spray covers fence pickets and railing spindles faster with even coverage. We back-brush sprayed surfaces to ensure penetration. You receive daily updates through CompanyCam with timestamped progress photos.

Step 5 — Final Walkthrough

We walk the full project with you — every deck board, every fence section, every railing. If anything does not meet your standards, we address it before we leave. Final payment is collected only after you are fully satisfied. Every project is backed by our 2-year limited workmanship warranty and a lifetime product warranty from the manufacturer.

Stain Transparency Options

Stain comes in three transparency levels. Transparent shows the full wood grain with minimal color. Semi-transparent adds color while still showing grain — the most popular choice for Nashville decks. Solid stain provides full color coverage similar to paint but absorbs into the wood rather than forming a thick film. We discuss all options during the consultation and recommend based on your wood's age and condition.

What Affects the Cost of Deck and Fence Work in Nashville

Every deck and fence project is different. We complete an on-site assessment and provide a detailed written estimate covering labor, materials, and timeline — within 48 hours. Call 615-987-8011 for your free estimate.

Factor

Why It Matters

Square Footage

Larger decks and longer fence runs require more labor and material

Wood Condition

Decks needing extensive repair, stripping, or mildew treatment cost more to prep

Product Type

Solid stain and paint require more material than transparent stain

Accessibility

Multi-level decks, elevated structures, and steep lots add complexity

Square Footage

A 200-square-foot deck is a different project than an 800-square-foot multi-level deck with stairs, railings, and a connected pergola. Fence runs are measured in linear feet. We measure on-site so your estimate reflects the actual surface area.

Wood Condition

A deck stained 2 years ago and in good condition needs only cleaning and a maintenance coat. A deck that has gone 5 or more years without treatment — with graying, mildew, peeling stain, and soft spots — requires extensive prep before any coating can be applied. Prep labor is the biggest variable in deck project cost.

Product Type

Transparent and semi-transparent stains use less product per square foot than solid stains or paint. Multi-coat applications — required for bare or heavily weathered wood — use more product than single maintenance coats. We specify the exact product and number of coats in your estimate.

Accessibility

Ground-level decks are straightforward. Elevated decks, second-story balconies, and multi-level structures require ladders or scaffolding to reach undersides and support posts. Nashville homes in hilly neighborhoods like Green Hills and Bellevue often have elevated rear decks that affect project scope.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does deck staining cost in Nashville?
Most deck staining projects range from approximately $1,600 to $5,500 depending on the size of the deck, prep requirements, condition of the wood, railing and spindle detail, number of colors, and overall scope. We complete an on-site assessment and provide a detailed estimate covering labor, materials, and timeline. Call 615-987-8011 for your free estimate.
Most decks in Nashville need a maintenance coat every 2 to 3 years. South-facing decks and uncovered surfaces may need attention sooner due to higher UV and weather exposure. Covered porches and shaded decks can go longer between coats. We assess your deck’s current condition and recommend the right maintenance schedule.
For horizontal deck floor surfaces that take foot traffic and direct weather, stain is usually the better choice — it penetrates the wood and wears gradually rather than peeling. Paint works well on railings, vertical surfaces, and structures with minimal foot traffic. We discuss both options during the consultation and recommend the approach that fits your deck’s material, condition, and how you use it.
Late spring through early fall, when temperatures are consistently above 50 degrees and humidity is moderate. Stain needs warm, dry conditions to penetrate the wood and cure properly. Cool overnight temperatures and high humidity slow curing and can cause the finish to remain tacky or peel prematurely. We schedule deck work during optimal weather windows and will reschedule rather than apply coating in poor conditions.
Yes. We stain and paint all types of residential fencing including privacy fences, picket fences, split rail, and decorative fencing. Fence staining follows the same process: cleaning, prep, and professional application. Fence projects are often combined with deck work for scheduling efficiency.
Yes, though this is a more involved project. Stripping existing paint requires chemical strippers, pressure washing, and thorough sanding to remove the old film and open the wood pores for stain penetration. We assess the feasibility during the initial visit and include all stripping work in the estimate if you choose to transition from paint to stain.
New pressure-treated wood needs time to dry before it will accept stain properly. If stain is applied too soon, the wood’s moisture content prevents proper penetration and the finish fails prematurely. We check moisture levels during the consultation and advise on timing. In most cases, new pressure-treated decks need several months of weathering before they are ready for stain.
Sweep leaves and debris regularly to prevent moisture trapping. Clean the surface once or twice a year with a mild deck cleaner. Move planters and furniture periodically to allow even weathering. Avoid pressure washing between maintenance coats unless mildew is visible. These simple steps help extend the life of your stain between professional refreshes.
